Are you moving soon and looking for a good moving company? Thousands of people each year decide they need to move to another area. A professional moving company will be used by most of these people. The rest will be moving all on their own.

If you are going to be using a moving company, you should get a minimum of three estimates before you hire one to move you. This is so you will have an idea of what the costs should be. If you are backed up with the three estimates, you will be in a better bargaining position with the moving company you choose so you may be able to get your costs down if you tell them you have a lower estimate from another company. Some of the moving companies will lower their price to be more in line with what you are willing to pay if they know you have been shopping around. You can then save money by packing your own things to save time The less things you have to move, the less money it will cost. However, you may need more moving trucks if you have a lot of things to move and that will increase your moving costs.

Accidents do happen and sometimes a moving company will break an item that they are moving. This is why standard moving insurance will be included in your fee.Licensed movers are required by law to provide liability insurance for their customers. Before you hire your moving company, make sure they have this coverage.

One of the most stressful jobs you will ever do in your lifetime is that of moving. If you plan ahead though, it will not be so bad if you decide to get help by hiring a professional moving company. If you do it right, moving can be done with very little stress. You can help by keeping things organized and provide a list of your things for the movers.

If you have items you no longer want, jus throw them away or give them to goodwill or salvation army. Why pay for things to be moved that you do not use? This will save you money on storage also. Remember, hire a moving company to help you move and save yourself time and stress.

My husband and I recently decided to move to England for a couple years. My husband was offered a spot in a fantastic MBA program there, so we thought it would be a nice change of scenery. We had been in our house for ten years and we decided to sell it. Trying to manage a renter, while across an ocean sounded difficult. In addition, we think we might move elsewhere when we come back to the states. We knew we were going to need some sort of self storage, while we were away. Once we had the initial meeting with our realtor, it became apparent that we were going to be good friends with the joy of self storage.

Our realtor wasted no time evaluating things and jotting a list down for us. “Alright, if you are ready for me to be brutally honest, I am ready to give you the low down on the things you should do to get this beautiful house ready,” she said. We told her we were ready. The woman is brilliant, because she spilled forth the thing you should always remember when you put your house on the market. She told us to remember that we are selling this house and that it now belongs to someone else. “This allows you to let go of all the emotional stuff that goes along with this, and focus on the end goal of selling. We knew right then and there that we would need self storage long before our move to England. Our closets needed to only be filled only about a third of capacity, to give the illusion of space, and we had way to many dressers. People who are shopping for a house want to picture their things in the house. She swapped out our comfy couch and chair with a stodgy Victorian era white set that made us feel like giants when we sat on it. That was only the beginning. By the time she was done with the list, we needed another house to put all the things from our house that someone else might not like.

We got a space in one of those self storage buildings nearby. I feel like we were constantly unloading things there, in the weeks we got the house ready. All the stodgy furniture items delivered to the house for staging meant all our cozy real people couches and such were put in self storage. Once the house sold, we then had to decide what things were heading to England with us and what would go into storage. We rented another self storage unit near my parents in another state. We had to fit in a weekend trip there, in the comfort of a large moving truck, to move everything into storage. We emptied the self storage unit we rented when we were selling the house, moved some of the contents to a new storage place, shipped some of it to England, and sold what we thought we would not want later. I felt like it was all very George Carlin with the “you gotta move to a new place to hold your stuff” shtick.

Moving to another location is an eventful task complete with worries and hard work. In this day and age, almost everybody moves and that too at short notice. The compression of time also means that the hapless mover has lesser time to fend for himself at the new place. In come moving pods … a concept devised to take away just these worries. They are mini truck sized containers which come in various sizes to suit the customer’s needs. The word Pods, is actually an acronym which stands for Portable On Demand Storage (PODS). Because the acronym so aptly captures the essence of the concept it is now popularly being called as a regular word Pods. The growing popularity of Pods stems from their easy customization, flexibility of usage and the added advantage of enhanced storage facilities. Moving Pod companies very cleverly enhanced Pod convenience by configuring the dimensions to fit a standard parking spot. This way the customer does not obstruct his neighbors while moving and thus can shift luggage at leisure.

Moving companies further sweeten the deal by offering customized packaging material. These come in packages meant to pack a one room two room or a three room house. An example of packing material configuration is 20 Small Moving Boxes (18×14x12), 10 Medium Moving Boxes (20×20x15), 10 Large Moving Boxes (23×23x16), 100 yards of 2″ Packing Tape, 80 feet of Bubble Wrap and two Permanent Markers. Pods are constructed out of a high grade steel frame, high strength waterproof plywood reinforced with aluminum built to withstand inclement weather rain, hail, storms, sleet and snow. The locking arrangements are very good and burglar proof. Customers can safely load partially one day one, lock up for the night and continue loading the nest day without fear of being burgled. Environmental controls through air conditioning and dehumidifiers are also available in customized pods for items requiring such treatment. For those who just cannot do without knowing everything, companies provide instantaneous cargo location through incorporation of GPS tracking technology. The veritable ‘Control Freak’ can track and trace his belongings all the way through the transit.

The Storage option is by far the most popular aspect of the Moving Pods service. Customers can now ‘fill it and forget it’ till they find a new home. The company takes care of the pods in their secure warehouses. Latest in RFID technology ensures proper cataloguing and localization of items and pods in a warehouse. Does all this cost? Sure it does, but then the convenience, safety and time saving is worth the money, something a traditional trucking move can never hope to match. Where do you find these services? Simple, just Google ‘moving pods’ or ’self storage’ or ‘portable storage’ and see a listing for the entire country unfold before your eyes. Check for bargains, they are always there. You may well come out with a winner.

Moving is insanely stressful, and moving day is the most stressful part of any move. However, taking care of a few details in advance can make moving day much less of a strain. Here are some tried and true moving tips for easing the strain of moving day.

Put together a survival kit.

On the last day, you will have one last little pile of belongings to pack: all the bedding, toiletries, dishes, cups, pans, and little details (alarm clock, iPod, box of favorite tea) that you used up to the last minute. Your impulse will be to sweep the pile haphazardly into any half full moving boxes you still have lying around. Don’t give in to it! All the things you needed when you were finished packing your old house will be the things you will need most as you unpack in the new house. Instead of forcing yourself to dig through half a dozen moving boxes to find the things you need, pack all your moving essentials into their own boxes. Write “Moving Kit” or “Open First” on the boxes. When you unpack, make sure they go into their own room and are not buried by a stack of other boxes. You will find that settling into your new home goes faster when you have your moving survival kit ready to deploy as soon as you move in.

Make some ready to eat meals.

Too often, moving involves endless stops at donut shops and convenience stores for whatever foodlike substances you can scavenge. By the time you are done moving, everyone is full of sugar and grease, overcaffeinated, and short tempered. To prevent that, spend the night before packing ready to go meals that do not need reheating. Even something as simple as a ham sandwich and a pudding cup can make an incredible difference in your and your moving companion’s moods.

Prepare to camp.

You were careful and had all the utilities turned on days in advance. When you walk in the front door, you expect everything, from the electricity and gas right down to the Internet, to be working. It never works out that way. The gas company thinks you live at 41 Park Street, not 14 Park Street, or the electric company thinks you wanted service for NEXT week, or the cable company forgot to tell you about a four day delay in turning services on. Get ready to meet these little crises in advance. Fully charge your laptop and cell phone before you leave the old house, pack bedrolls, flashlights, candles, and lighters in the top of your moving kit, and keep a stash of food that you can eat without heating it. Have a list of all the utilities’ contact information and your account numbers so that when you need to get something turned on right away, the numbers are at your fingertips.

We recently moved from one part of the city to another. We always hired a moving companies for our previous moves. It always involved a whirlwind team of people at our house who packed things right from under your nose. I am a bit of a control freak and that always left me feeling completely out of balance. Most of the time, we would have the majority of things packed ahead of time and let the movers do the big stuff. The more we packed, the more unrecognizable the rooms would become and we could barely move around all the stacks of boxes. We always wished we had a garage or staging area for all the packed boxes, so we could at least still have space to live while we were packing. If only we would have known about pods storage. We only saw two ways to do this. We hire movers or we do it all ourselves.

We decided to try something new this time. Upon on a recommendation from a friend, we used one of those pods storage companies. They delivered the storage unit to our curb. The container was very secure and made of heavy steel. They come in all sizes, but we had to get a pretty big one for the contents of our house. For eight days, that pods storage unit sat conveniently for our moving needs. We would come home from work, have some dinner and a glass of wine (okay, I am making it sound more enjoyable than it really was), pack a couple boxes and move them out of the house and into the container. We did not have to rush as we had done with so many of our other moves. We decided to hire some people to take care of all the heavy stuff and furniture moving for us. The pods storage company gave us a recommendation, so we did not even have to do any of the leg work to find movers. The movers came the day prior to the container being picked up. The container was picked up the next day and immediately delivered to our new abode.

Now moving day is always hectic. Having to unload and unpack everything in new place the same day that you just packed the old place is exhausting. Another advantage of pods storage is that, like during the moving phase, you can take your time unpacking. Our furniture and heavy boxes were offloaded by movers (we hired the same guys we hired in the packing phase) that day. We took our time to unpack the rest, which allowed us to get organized and not feel overwhelmed. When we were all unpacked, the pods storage people picked the container up and we were all done. You can also store your unit via the pods storage company in an air conditioned and heated warehouse, if you are making a long distance move.

It was much less stressful and more cost effective to hire pods storage. We had the storage unit for a total of three weeks and it ran us about the same amount we would have paid to lease a U haul for a weekend. It did not take us weeks to figure out where things were or remember what was packed with what.

I remember clearly when our friends decided to move from DC not too long ago. They had been here not too long, but long enough. We had become friends because the lived near us. I think they also had a house somewhere else the entire time they were here. Because they owned several houses far away from each other, they had stuff all over the place in storage units.

When they decided to move back to the west coast, they explored their options for how to store things while they moved. There were many options and sizes that they could use, and they were happy to know that the storage unit could be placed on their street. Well, it wasn’t great for us that they moved away. They tell us they are considering coming back east sometime.
